⛵ Indiana — Sailing Resources
Indiana offers two distinct sailing worlds: big-water access to Lake Michigan via Michigan City (a key southern harbor for the Great Lakes) and excellent freshwater sailing on large inland reservoirs, especially Lake Monroe near Bloomington. The scene is practical and trailer-friendly for many owners.
Boater Education
- Indiana DNR Boating Education — Required for anyone 15 years or older operating a motorboat or PWC who does not hold a valid Indiana driver’s license. Specific age rules apply: under 10 cannot operate; 10–11 only with adult supervision; 12–17 have restrictions. No general mandatory requirement for licensed adult operators.
Approved courses are available online and in-person. A certificate is lifetime and recommended for insurance. Carry proof when required.
Marinas & Harbors
Indiana’s primary big-water access is through Michigan City on Lake Michigan. Inland, Lake Monroe is the standout for serious sailing with a dedicated sailing association and marina. Other reservoirs offer good trailer-sailing options.
Lake Michigan (Michigan City)
- Washington Park Marina (Michigan City) — Main public marina with 600+ slips (25–60 ft), transient slips, fuel, pump-out, launch ramp. Excellent access to southern Lake Michigan sailing grounds. Seasonal and overnight options.
- Trail Creek Marina (Michigan City) — Additional slips and facilities managed by the Port Authority, with transient availability.
- Good jumping-off point for Chicago, St. Joseph, and further Great Lakes cruising.
Lake Monroe (Near Bloomington)
- Lake Monroe Sailing Association (LMSA) / Moores Creek Sailing Marina — Sailing-focused marina with ~100 wet slips (up to 34 ft), mooring buoys, dinghy access, pump-out. Active club with racing, cruising, and junior programs. Indiana’s first “Clean Marina.”
- Fourwinds Resort and Marina — Larger full-service facility on Lake Monroe with slips, storage, rentals, and hotel amenities. Good for bigger boats and visitors.
Michigan City is the go-to for Lake Michigan access from Indiana. Lake Monroe offers protected, scenic sailing with a strong community. Transient space exists but book ahead in peak summer. Many owners trailer boats from central Indiana.
Marine Surveyors
- Indiana has a modest number of accredited surveyors. Many owners use surveyors from neighboring Illinois, Michigan, or Ohio who regularly work on Lake Michigan or inland lakes.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Indiana or the Great Lakes / Midwest region.
Surveyors familiar with freshwater (especially Great Lakes) conditions are ideal for corrosion and rig checks on sailboats.
Brokerages
Indiana has a relatively small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most activity occurs through private sales or brokers based in Illinois or Michigan.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
- Some local dealers around Michigan City and Bloomington handle brokerage on a limited basis.
Lake Michigan and Lake Monroe have active used boat markets, especially for trailerable and small cruising sailboats.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Lake Monroe Sailing Association (LMSA) — The primary sailing club in Indiana, with a dedicated marina on Lake Monroe. Active racing, cruising, junior sailing, and social programs. Strong community focus.
- Michigan City area clubs — Local yacht clubs and sailing groups provide racing and social opportunities with direct Lake Michigan access.
- Other reservoirs (Geist, Morse, etc.) have smaller clubs and sailing schools, especially around the Indianapolis area.
- Indiana Sailing Clubs — US Sailing
Lake Monroe is the clear center of organized inland sailing in Indiana. Michigan City serves as the gateway for those wanting big-water Great Lakes experience. Many owners trailer boats from central Indiana.
