⛵ Colorado — Sailing Resources
Colorado offers high-altitude sailing on mountain reservoirs, most notably Dillon Reservoir (9,017 ft — one of the highest major sailing lakes in North America). Other popular waters include Grand Lake, Pueblo Reservoir, Cherry Creek Reservoir, and Horsetooth Reservoir. Expect strong afternoon winds, short seasons, and unique challenges from altitude (thinner air affects sails, engines, and human performance). Most activity is on lakes managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife or municipalities.
Boater Education
- Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) Boating Safety — As of June 1, 2024, operators of motorboats and PWCs must be at least 18 years old. Persons 14–17 may operate only if they complete an approved boating safety course and carry the certificate. Operators 18+ have no mandatory education requirement but courses are strongly recommended.
Approved courses are available through CPW and NASBLA-approved providers. The certificate must be carried onboard for underage operators. Everyone is encouraged to take a course for insurance discounts and safety.
Marinas & Harbors
Most Colorado sailing happens on high mountain reservoirs. Dillon Reservoir is the premier sailing venue with the Dillon Yacht Club (highest yacht club in North America). Other lakes offer more powerboat/fishing focus but welcome sailboats. Short seasons (typically May–October) and afternoon winds are the norm.
Dillon Reservoir (Summit County)
- Dillon Marina (Dillon) — Full-service marina on the highest major sailing lake in the US (9,017 ft). Offers slips (long-term waitlist), short-term transient rentals, ASA-certified sailing school, boat rentals (including sailboats), storage, and maintenance. Home of the Dillon Yacht Club.
- Frisco Bay Marina (Frisco) — Also on Dillon Reservoir. Slips, moorings, storage, rentals, and repairs. Convenient to downtown Frisco.
Other Notable Lakes
- Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo) — North Shore Marina and South Shore Marina offer slips, fuel, and services. More power/fishing oriented but usable for sailboats. Good southern Colorado option.
- Grand Lake area — Grand Lake Marina / Boater’s Choice, Trail Ridge Marina, Headwaters Marina, and Beacon Landing (nearby Lake Granby). Popular for recreation with beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park views.
- Front Range reservoirs — Cherry Creek Reservoir, Horsetooth Reservoir, and Carter Lake have marinas and active sailing communities closer to Denver and Fort Collins.
Long-term slips at popular lakes (especially Dillon) often have waitlists. Short-term/transient options exist but book early. Altitude affects everything — bring extra fuel, watch for sudden weather, and consider how thin air impacts sails and engines. Check CPW for invasive species inspection requirements when trailering boats.
Marine Surveyors
- Local options are limited compared to coastal states. Many owners use surveyors based along the Front Range (Denver/Boulder area) or traveling from neighboring states.
- Boatman Sam’s Marine Survey — Mentioned positively in local boating groups for pre-purchase and mechanical surveys.
For the most current and complete list, use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Colorado. Expect surveyors to travel to high-country lakes; allow extra time and budget.
Brokerages
Colorado has a smaller dedicated sailboat brokerage scene than coastal states. Most activity happens through private sales, small local dealers, or online platforms.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
- Local marine dealers around Dillon, Grand Lake, and the Front Range occasionally handle sailboats.
When buying in Colorado, pay special attention to altitude effects on engines and the short boating season when evaluating condition and value.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Dillon Yacht Club (DYC) — The highest yacht club in North America (9,017 ft) and the center of organized sailing in Colorado. Active racing (including the annual Dillon Open Regatta — one of the highest regattas in the world), cruising, junior sailing programs, and social events. Very welcoming to both racers and recreational sailors on Dillon Reservoir.
- Grand Lake Yacht Club — Historic private club on Colorado’s largest natural lake.
- Dillon Marina Sailing School — ASA-certified facility offering Basic Keelboat and other courses on Dillon Reservoir. Excellent resource for learning in high-altitude conditions.
- Colorado Sailing Clubs — US Sailing — Directory of additional clubs and organizations across the state.
Dillon Reservoir is the clear hub for serious sailing in Colorado. The short season and high altitude create a unique, challenging, and rewarding environment. Many owners trailer boats from Denver and the Front Range on weekends.
