⛵ California — Sailing Resources
California has world-class sailing on San Francisco Bay, the Southern California coast, and Channel Islands. All operators now required to hold a California Boater Card (2025).
Boater Education
- California Boater Card (Division of Boating & Waterways) — As of January 1, 2025, **all** operators of motorized vessels (including sailboats with engines) on California waters must carry a California Boater Card, regardless of age. Lifetime card ($10) obtained after completing an approved boating safety course.
Approved courses include classroom, online, and on-water options. Out-of-state cards are generally not accepted. Carry the card on board at all times. Full details and approved providers at californiaboatercard.com.
Marinas & Harbors
California has some of the best (and most expensive) sailing in the U.S. — San Francisco Bay, the Delta, Monterey Bay, and especially Southern California with easy access to the Channel Islands. Transient slips are in high demand and can be costly; plan ahead and use Dockwa where available. Many facilities are more powerboat-oriented.
San Francisco Bay & Delta
- Berkeley Marina (Berkeley) — Large public marina with transient berths, fuel, pump-out, and good access to the Bay. Popular base for Bay sailors.
- South Beach Harbor (San Francisco Embarcadero) — Convenient downtown location with transient tie-ups, shore power/water, and amenities.
- Clipper Yacht Harbor (Sausalito) — Full-service with transient slips, haul-out, and repairs. Classic Marin County option.
- Westpoint Harbor (Redwood City) — Protected harbor with transient options and strong liveaboard community.
Southern California
- Kona Kai Marina (Shelter Island, San Diego) — One of the closest marinas to the open ocean in San Diego Bay. Good transient availability for larger sailboats.
- Safe Harbor Cabrillo Isle / Bayfront (San Diego) — Multiple Safe Harbor locations with transient slips and full services.
- Marina del Rey (Los Angeles) — Massive harbor with many marinas; transient space is competitive and expensive but offers excellent access to Santa Monica Bay and the Channel Islands.
- Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard/Ventura) — Good jumping-off point for the northern Channel Islands with several marinas and yacht clubs.
Transient space in California is often limited and pricey (especially SoCal and SF Bay). Many sailors use anchorages (Catalina, Channel Islands) or plan short hops. Check current availability via Dockwa or direct calls. Fuel, pump-out, and haul-out services are widely available but book ahead in peak season.
Marine Surveyors
- Christian & Co. Marine Surveyors (San Diego) — Highly regarded for pre-purchase and insurance surveys in Southern California. Frequently recommended by local owners and brokers.
- Brad Destache (San Diego area) — SAMS accredited, experienced with yachts and small craft.
- Pacific Marine Surveyors (Los Angeles / Orange County area) — NAMS-CMS and SAMS accredited surveyors with broad experience in SoCal.
California has a large number of excellent accredited surveyors, especially in the major boating centers (SF Bay, San Diego, Marina del Rey/Long Beach). Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter by region for the most current options. Many owners get referrals from local yacht clubs or brokers.
Brokerages
California has one of the largest and most active sailboat markets in the country, with strong inventory in San Diego, Marina del Rey, Long Beach, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Many established brokers operate in the major harbors (San Diego, Marina del Rey, Sausalito, etc.).
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader — filter by region for the best results.
Working with a local broker who knows the specific harbor and conditions (e.g., SF Bay wind and currents vs. SoCal) is highly recommended when buying in California.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Modern Sailing School & Club (Sausalito & Berkeley) — Highly regarded ASA school and club offering lessons, charters, and a supportive community on San Francisco Bay. Excellent resource for new and developing sailors.
- Channel Islands Yacht Club (Oxnard) — Known as “The Friendliest Yacht Club on the Coast.” Strong racing, cruising, and social program with easy access to the northern Channel Islands.
- Major yacht clubs — San Francisco Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club (SF Bay), San Diego Yacht Club, Long Beach Yacht Club, and others offer racing, cruising, and member resources (many have reciprocal privileges).
- California Sailing Clubs — US Sailing — Comprehensive directory of clubs across the state.
California’s sailing scene is very active year-round. Many practical owner-operators participate through ASA schools, smaller clubs, or racing fleets rather than traditional large yacht clubs. The Channel Islands and Catalina are favorite cruising destinations from the SoCal coast.
