⛵ Arizona — Sailing Resources
Arizona offers excellent desert sailing on large reservoirs including Lake Pleasant (near Phoenix), Roosevelt Lake (the state's largest), Apache Lake, Canyon Lake, and Lake Havasu on the Colorado River. Expect strong afternoon thermals, monsoon thunderstorms in summer, and fluctuating water levels. Most sailors launch early to beat the heat; many facilities are more powerboat-oriented so confirm sailboat services (mast handling, etc.) ahead.
Boater Education
- Arizona Game & Fish Department Boating Safety Education — Arizona does not currently require a boater education card for operating motorized boats, but AZGFD offers classroom, home study, and online courses (highly recommended for safety and reciprocity with other states).
Approved courses are also available through BoatUS Foundation and Boat-Ed. A card can help with insurance discounts and boating in states that mandate one.
Marinas & Harbors
Arizona's primary sailing waters are its large man-made reservoirs. Key hubs are Lake Pleasant (northwest of Phoenix), Roosevelt Lake (the largest in the state), and Lake Havasu on the Colorado River. Transient options exist but many facilities cater more to powerboats—call ahead for sailboat-friendly slips, mast stepping, or haul-out.
- Pleasant Harbor Marina & RV Resort (Lake Pleasant) — Full-service marina with wet and dry slips, fuel, mechanical repairs, launch/retrieval, and large RV park. Very popular base for Phoenix-area sailors and weekend racers. Open year-round.
- Scorpion Bay Marina (Lake Pleasant) — Large floating marina with slips for yachts and smaller sailboats, wet/dry storage, rentals, and membership perks. Adjacent to the Sailboat Shop (Catalina dealer and ASA school).
- Roosevelt Lake Marina — Full-service on Arizona’s largest lake (Roosevelt). Covered and open slips (30–55 ft+), fuel, store, restaurant, and easy online transient booking via Molo. Good option for bigger sailboats.
- Apache Lake Marina & Resort — Remote and scenic on Apache Lake with day-use and long-term wet slips plus storage. Quiet alternative with basic services and RV options.
- Lake Havasu area marinas (Colorado River) — Lake Havasu Marina, Havasu Springs Resort & Marina, Black Meadow Landing, and Topock Resort & Marina offer slips and overnight mooring. Use Dockwa for many Havasu and other AZ transient reservations.
- Snag-A-Slip — Another solid resource for finding and booking slips across Arizona lakes.
Desert conditions bring big afternoon winds, dust, and monsoon thunderstorms (July–Sept). Water levels fluctuate—check current levels for Lake Pleasant (CAP managed) and others before planning multi-day trips. UV protection for sails, lines, and covers is essential.

Brokerages
- The Boat Broker (The Boat Brokers) (Lake Havasu City) — Long-established consignment and sales for boats, RVs, and classic cars. One of the more active local marine brokers on the Colorado River side.
- Local marine dealers (Lake Havasu) — Advantage Boats, Sun Country Marine Group, and similar dealerships handle new/used powerboats and some brokerage; useful contacts even if sail inventory is limited.
Arizona has a relatively small dedicated sailboat market. Most current sailboat listings (Catalinas, Hunters, etc.) appear on national platforms: YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Buyers often work with brokers in California or the Pacific Northwest as well.
