The Verdict: The Catalina 27 is the most-produced 27-footer ever built — a testament to its practical design and affordable pricing. It's an honest boat: not glamorous, not fast, but capable of coastal cruising and a solid learner's platform. The systems are aged on every boat now (they're all 35–55 years old), so budget accordingly. The parts network via Catalina Direct and the C27 owner community are genuine assets. At $5,000–$10,000 for a solid example, it's one of the lowest-risk entry points to keel boat ownership.

⚠ Known Issues & Common Problems

✅ Survey Checklist

Hull, Keel & Deck

  • All through-hulls — knife blade dezincification test; operate every seacock
  • Full deck tap test — mast base, hatches, chainplates, all hardware
  • Keel-hull joint — look for cracking or separation in fairing
  • Bilge sump — standing water or rust staining around keel bolts
  • Hull-deck joint — inspect rubrail for separation
  • Osmotic blistering below waterline — note extent
  • Rudder bearing play — should be firm, no side-to-side movement

Rig & Sails

  • Standing rigging age — ask for documentation; inspect all swages
  • Chainplates — any rust staining on interior below chainplate locations
  • Forestay and toggle condition
  • Sail condition — hoist and inspect main and headsail
  • All running rigging — sheets, halyards, furling line condition

Engine & Systems

  • Engine type — diesel preferred; Atomic 4 gas requires extra scrutiny
  • Engine hours and service records
  • Transmission function — forward, reverse, neutral at sea trial
  • Fuel tank condition — steel tanks may be rusty; check fuel color
  • Bilge pump function — manual and electric
  • Electrical panel — breaker condition, wiring age
  • Head hoses — smell test; plan on replacement
  • Fresh water tank and pump system

Sea Trial

  • Engine cold start and warm-up time
  • Under sail — balance, weather helm, reefing function
  • Any unusual vibration under power (prop/shaft issue)
  • Furling system — smooth operation throughout range
  • All electronics and instruments

💰 Price Guide by Year & Condition

Year RangeNotesProjectGoodExcellent
1970–1976Oldest production. Atomic 4 gas engine typical. Most dated interiors and systems.$3,000–$5,000$6,000–$9,000$10,000–$12,000
1977–1982Mid-production. Some diesel conversions. Most common on the market.$4,000–$6,000$7,000–$10,000$11,000–$14,000
1983–1988Latest production. Best systems from factory. More likely to have diesel.$5,000–$7,000$8,000–$11,000$12,000–$15,000
Value tip: A C27 with a documented diesel conversion (Universal M-18 or M-25, Westerbeke, or Yanmar) in good condition is worth $2,000–$4,000 more than an equivalent Atomic 4 boat. The diesel is safer, more reliable, and dramatically easier to find parts for. Prioritize diesel over year range.
