⚙ Diesel Engine Spares Kit Checklist
Everything a cruising sailboat should carry for basic engine maintenance and emergency repairs. Print and pack before every passage.
⚠ Offshore vs. coastal: Items marked (offshore) are essential for bluewater passages but optional for coastal day sailing. Always carry the Essential items regardless of trip length.
🟥 Filters — Change at Every Service Interval
- Primary fuel filter / water separator (Racor or equivalent)2 spares
- Secondary (engine-mounted) fuel filter — match your engine model exactly2 spares
- Engine oil filter — verify part number against engine manual2 spares
- Air filter element (if fitted)1 spare
🟥 Raw Water Cooling — The Most Common Failure Point
- Raw water impeller — carry at least 2; this is the #1 offshore repair item2–3 spares
- Impeller pump cover gasket / O-ring — these tear when you replace the impeller2 spares
- Raw water pump body (if electric pump or if pump is old)1 spare (offshore)
- Thermostat — replace every 2 years; carry one spare1 spare
- Coolant hose clamps — assorted sizes for all hose connections10 assorted
- Lengths of raw water hose — match diameter of your largest hose1 ft each size
🟡 Belts & Drive Components
- Alternator belt (V-belt) — exact replacement; measure your belt or check manual2 spares

- Injector pump belt (if belt-driven on your engine)1 spare (offshore)
🟢 Oils & Fluids
- Engine oil — correct grade for your engine (check dipstick label)4–6 quarts
- Transmission / gear oil (ATF or SAE 30 — check manual)1 quart
- Coolant / antifreeze — premixed or concentrate + distilled water1 gallon
- Diesel fuel biocide / additive (Biobor, Diesel Kleen)1 bottle
- Petroleum jelly / waterproof grease for impeller installation1 tube
🔵 Electrical & Fuel System
- Spare fuel injectors or injector rebuild kit (offshore)1 set (offshore)
